As a Rotterdam-based artist, João Sequeira is a young percussionist and part-time composer dedicated to bringing people closer to the concert halls. He started his music studies at Conservatório de Música e Artes do Dão (Portugal) at the age of seven and has been part of numerous projects, ensembles, and orchestras. Recent collaborations involve playing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orkest, Sinfonia Rotterdam, the AskoSchoenberg ensemble, the Mallet Collective, Lausanne Marimba Ensemble, the former Slagwerk Den Haag now renamed as HIIT, Havelok percussion and deDoelen Ensemble. In 2016 he enrolled in “Escola Professional de Música de Espinho”, joining the class of Nuno Aroso, Jeffery Davis, Eduardo Cardinho, Joaquim Alves, Rui Rodrigues, and André Dias, and in 2019 he moved to the Netherlands, to integrate the prestigious Classical Percussion Department of Codarts, led by Chris Leenders and Ramon Lormans. 


As a percussionist, he was awarded 1st Place in the 2nd Contest Fundação Lapa do Lobo, 3rd place in Tomarimbando International Vibraphone Competition, and, as part of Kāna Trio, the Grachtenfestival 2022 Vakjury Prijs, the Short Film Prize in IPCL 2022 and is a finalist of Dutch Classical Talent for the 2024/2025 season. As a composer, he was awarded 1st place in the Tomarimbando National Composition Competition for Marimba 2018 with the piece “Reflexão: La vague déférlante”  and the Prémio de Composição Séc. XXI 2018 with the piece “Prelude et Deconstruction”, for vibraphone solo.
